The case for RVM Risk Management |
According to the Department of Transport, it has been estimated that up to a third of all road traffic accidents involve either a company car or a private car being driven on company business.
From a safety perspective, it is obviously important to ensure the risk of accidents is minimised and the fleet has in place some form of ‘pre-accident’ risk reduction programme.
In fact, aspects of a risk management programme are now a legal requirement under Health and Safety legislation.

Fleet Risk Safety Policy |
Drivers Licence Checking |
Driving Skills Assessments |
Driver Training and Seminars |
Driver Safety Records |
“Grey Fleet” control |
It is now accepted that by raising driving standards, a driver assessment and training programme will lead to reduced accident and insurance costs, reduced fuel and vehicle running costs and increased residual values of vehicles. |

Fleet Risk, Safety Evaluation |
| RVM will attend the client’s premises and interview key users and controllers of the client’s fleet with the intention of benchmarking the client’s current levels of fleet safety against other similar fleets as well as the optimum level that would both satisfy current legislation and reduce claim cost and frequency. |

Fleet Risk, Safety Policy |
This is a key component and usually the starting point in a fleet’s journey towards increased safety awareness and reduced claims. RVM has created many examples of policies that have worked in the past and can share its expertise in creating something that suits the circumstances of each fleet client. |

Drivers Licence Checking |
Electronic links to DVLA make this service quick and easy. The benefits of the RVM licence checking service are:
Saves time for fleet clients by taking over the administration of the DVLA mandates and all communication with drivers on this subject |
The Client is immediately notified of all non-standard results and can specify what is to be regarded as non-standard |
Full accountability for the check results of the checks can be accessed in real-time online via the RVM file-view facility |
Satisfies one of the main requirements of current Health and safety legislation |
Driving Skills Assessments |
The key benefits of the RVM Driver Assessment programme are:
Prevents accidents in advance by identifying the client’s most 'at-risk' drivers and thereby minimises the risks of fatalities, injuries and asset damage |
Complies with legal requirements for safety, transport and corporate liability |
Controls, manages and minimises safety, insurance and liability costs and exposures |
Enhances the brand reputation of the fleet client through an enhanced safety culture |
Benchmarks the driver’s progress towards accident-free transport |
Driver Training and Seminars |
It is because fleets have had to buy risk products separately from claims handling that one of the time-consuming jobs for the fleet client is to review the claims data and other inputs (such as results from the assessments and licence checking) BEFORE they can make decisions on WHO should attend the training sessions. RVM saves this time by carrying out this function proactively on behalf of the fleet client.
Benefits of the RVM driver training programme:
Increased fuel efficiency |
Reduced incident frequency |
Increased residual values |
More skilled and competent drivers |
Increased brand protection |
Reduced insurance costs |
Compliance with latest Health and Safety legislation |
A workshop environment can be just as effective as one-to-one in-car driver training if it is delivered well and the subject matter is relevant.
The RVM driver workshops deal with five main accident types:
Rear end shunts |
Roundabouts |
Turning left / right |
Parking and manoeuvring |
Junctions |
The half-day session is packed with excellent driving tips and it represents a very cost-effective way to educate all drivers to be risk-aware.
Driver Safety Records |
To offer maximum accountability to the fleet client and bring together the results of the program in one location, RVM has created driver safety records for each driver that can be accessed online and contain:
Accident records (including who was at fault and what costs were incurred) |
Training records (whether in a workshop or an in-car situation) |
Results of driver assessments |
Results of Licence checks |
Other administrative records such as correspondence with drivers, copy documents and mandates, signatures on policy documents etc |
Grey Fleet control |
The Grey Fleet consists of:
Non-employees authorised to use company vehicles |
Employees without company vehicles that are authorised to use company vehicles from time to time |
Employees using their own vehicles on company business (cash-for-car schemes) from time to time |
In each instance, the fleet client is potentially liable for claims under the company motor fleet insurance policy, therefore, it would be both prudent of the client and understandable by the grey fleet driver that elements of the risk programme should be applied to them.
RVM offers the fleet client a fully outsourced web-based management facility in this area and recommends that as a minimum, grey fleet drivers agree to submit to the RVM grey fleet service, which comprises:
Declaration of Personal, Vehicle, Accident and Driving Licence details |
Declaration of compliance with the fleet’s Code of Conduct for Drivers, Road Risk Policy and Vehicle Conditions of Use statements |
Regular declaration of compliance (MOT, Road Tax, Insurance cover, servicing etc) |
‘Reminders’ to update RVM with renewal data to ensure ongoing compliance |
